The Ayuntamiento of Alozaina is presenting the first solo exhibition by the Belfast-born artist dmcq. His works have been described as paintings of sounds …and perhaps somewhere in his subconscious, they are a reflection of the music or soundscapes he has been absorbing and producing for many years.

Generally of an abstract nature, the works in this series consist of oils which have been poured, scraped, pulled, dripped and twisted. Often thick and vigorously worked, these surfaces are at times obliterated and reworked, with paint churned, dragged and deeply scored to create intense textures, shapes and movement. In this way the oils are woven and layered into and through each other creating spontaneous fusions of colour.

The oils are applied to canvas, wood and discarded boards with palette knives, hands and trowels. The works are never planned, they are in the moment and the resulting tangle of lines and colour satisfy a desire for childlike simplicity and the need for spontaneity. Applied to various sizes of canvas , we are presented with immediate impact, through an array of explosive colours and scale which drag the viewer into the painting.

An encounter with any of these paintings often raises many questions. Where does the painting start, where does it end, is it over one or more canvas 's or an entire series? In reality, none are really needed - they just are.

Living and painting in Alozaina he draws inspiration from the sky and nature presented throughout the Andalucian landscapes and shorelines, and of course sounds.
